Finding New Work as a Writer

If you write for a living and you're wondering how you can keep your career healthy and strong, you're going to have to consider many things along the way.

One of the main things is that you need to be aware of how you are going to find new work as a writer on a regular basis, but especially when it looks as though things are going to be moving in the wrong direction — or when something like a global pandemic strikes.

There are plenty of ways to find work as a writer, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Let’s take a look at some of the things to bear in mind if you are going to try and make this work.

Offer Something For Free

You need to be careful when you offer something for free — you don’t want to be taken advantage of, after all. But if you plan this out and you do it in a sensible and honest way, you can find that offering something for free is a good opening into finding more work or improving your income.

Let’s say that you want to try and branch out and teach people about writing as a means of earning more. You can do that by offering free webinars, and using a webinar funnel sales technique to then encourage those people to buy your books, or sign up for further courses, or whatever it might be. Similarly, offering a free chapter of a book can very often lead to increased sales of that book.

Hone In On Your Niche

It’s always good to have a niche, as that means you have something that you can really get to grips with in a way that nobody else can. If you can essentially make yourself the leading writer on a particular narrow subject, you will be able to find work forever, as long as there is sufficient interest in that thing. There is a balance to strike here, as you can see - if it is too niche, you won’t be able to drum up any interest at all, but if it is not niche enough then you will struggle to make yourself heard. Find that balance, and all will be well.

Get Marketing

One of the main reasons writers struggle is for the simple fact that they had failed to actually spend time marketing themselves properly. If you find that you are not marketing yourself enough, then you are going to have trouble getting the necessary work that you are looking for. Simple things like going on social media and being aware of your brand voice are going to make a huge difference here in terms of landing more work on a frequent basis. The more you are aware of this stuff, the better off you are going to be overall.
