In this video of the Blogging Answers series, I answer another excellent blogging question.

Blogging Question

Is it better to blog on Medium, LinkedIn, or Quora than on my own blog?

This question comes up often because some blogging experts recommend that you blog on those platforms. After all, they already have large audiences. Presumably, you don't have to work hard to attract readers if you publish on these platforms.

In contrast, when you're just starting out, your blog will have no readers at all. And it takes a lot of effort and time to gain traction.

So ... should you blog on Medium, LinkedIn, Quora, and similar sites?

The Categorical Answer

If you're blogging for business, then the categorial answer is "No!"

It's better to blog on your own site, because that's where you have the freedom and flexibility you need to:

  • build and express your own brand
  • grow your email list
  • promote products and services

You can even "sell" space on your blog to advertisers and content sponsors!

Yes, those big platforms have audiences already, but that doesn't mean you'll automatically attract massive readers to your posts. You'll still have to promote your posts to get readers.

If you're doing the work anyway, why not do it to build your own platform instead of someone else's?
